Future of Storytelling on Iversity

Future of Storytelling on Iversity

Future of Storytelling season 1 ended in December 2013, impressions settled for now, so it is time to put down a little memo of it. ∑ = It is a must have learning experience.

There were two main reasons, why I jumped in this mooc. The first, I am fan of TV series. Last year we watched at least six or seven seasons included Black Mirror, Homeland 3, House of Cards, Top of the Lake, Broadchurch, The Killing 1-2, Betas. On the other hand I would have liked to see how these guys design an eLearning course which is about storytelling by people who worked day by day on a field where stories and other kind of content (knowledge) are transmissioned (taught) to the audience (learners).

Additionally, the platform of Iversity was well designed, simple, highly usable, so the hook was happened before I saw anything from the content.

As we read on Christina’s site, this course had more than 86000 enrolled students, so it counts in Europe, the students loved it, but it is not a surprise. I tried to collect what were the key elements of this success from a designer perspective.

Simplicity

The structure and also the course content were very simple to understand. The emphasis of different types of information (video, text, quiz, tasks, interactivity) was balanced so well. The architecture of the platform supported this type of distribution correctly.

Annotated Video Lectures

One of the most important methodological part of the content. The popup annotations of the episodes, and also the moleskine explanations were effective tools for the students to get the milestones. This likely a hard work to produce, but this type of content rocks.

Attractive Guiding

The whole team was nice and natural and Christina Maria Schollerer was a perfect choice to be a guide of the journey. She was nice, sophisticated and motivating at once. Kindness and good sense of homour is key element during learning. The casting, the other characters were also very good, and most of the guest stars were inspirational.

Short Quizzles

I could endure a bit more test-like quizzles, but this tiny quiz method seemed very engaging and useful to generate little transectional payoffs. 🙂

High HOLD rate

Ok, everybody had the feeling in the university, when you couldn’t wait for next lecture in the following week (if you had a good teacher/right subject combination). But this kind of addiction is hard to be achieved online, especially in a learning situation. In this case, in every Friday you could hang on Twitter waiting for the green light to see the new episode. That part was awesome, as the whole course was an exiting show.

Actually the full process was a big learning experience, maybe the only thing i missed at the end is waving in some chunk of information about the second season…

Thanks again for all the guys who made this course possible.
